2000

Branch report - January 2000

Greetings for the new Millennium! Hope everyone had an enjoyable festive season and welcomed in the new century with enthusiasm and renewed energy for the busy year ahead.

Those who attended the Xmas parties at Baanya Biami were treated to the wonderful hospitality of the Messemakers and entertained by a magician. Our thanks to them for making a magical weekend.

The Association raised a magnificent $1145 from 3 Xmas fundraisers: Dutch auction: $546; Xmas Raffle: $263; Chocolate drive: $336. Thanks to everyone who supported these fundraisers.

Further events in 2000 to raise funds for the International Convention in Daylesford in September will be notified and your continuing support is much appreciated.

The last meeting of the year was addressed by Dr. Ravi Savarirayan of the Bone Dysplasia Clinic and Caroline Bowditch of the Genetics Support Network of Victoria. The meeting was very successful and reflects a new and closer relationship between the Association and the Genetics Department at the Royal Children's Hospital.

Best regards,

Branch report - July 2000

Recent adverse publicity in the Victorian press has caused sadness and distress for many of our members and their families. However, even bad publicity can be a cloud with a silver lining as it has resulted in numerous telephone enquiries from past and potential members. One lady who has no short stature in her family phoned, simply to offer her support for our Association.

I was subsequently approached by "The Age" newspaper, in Melbourne to do an in-depth article on our family, on how Oliver's condition has affected our lives. We decided as a family that we should participate in this article to try to redress the balance and show a positive image of short stature. I hope that we achieved this in some small way.

With the International Convention looming closer each day, the organising committee has completed their very successful fund-raising efforts and is now turning their attention to organising the numerous exciting events and activities planned for the week. One of the major events is the Medical Day which has now been finalised.

If you have not received your Convention Program and Registration Forms, these can be downloaded from our web site or alternatively, contact me on (03) 9388 9709, and I will send them to you. Just a reminder that the deadline for your booking deposit is 31st July, 2000.

Look forward to meeting up with old friends, and making many new ones at Daylesford in September!

Best regards,

Branch report - December 2000

"The party's over - it's time to call it a day!!" I think that song reflected the feelings of the Victorian Group in the post-Convention period! I have now written the last of the thank-you letters and Patrick Keane has finalised the Convention accounts. I would once more like to acknowledge the work of the Convention Co-ordinator, Gail Young and her Committee for the inestimable amount of work which went into planning and organising the Convention. I think we are all now suffering "fundraising fatigue" and are in need of a well-deserved break over the Xmas period.

Despite the post-Convention exhaustion, we still managed to summon up enough energy for the annual parties. The Adults' Party at the "Quiet Man" pub on 25 November was enjoyed by approx. 30 members and friends, though the venue was anything but "quiet"!!! The Children's Party on the following day at Albert Park was not well supported, which was disappointing but perhaps understandable, in view of the "exhaustion" factor mentioned above. Our thanks to Meredith Young for organising both events.

Finally, I would like to wish all members and their families a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year!

2001

Branch report - February 2001

Happy New Year everyone! 2001 is off to a good start with social activities planned for the next two months.

I hope there will be a good turnout for the first meeting of the year which will be a barbecue at the home of Jeff and Carol Izatt on Sunday 11 February.

Apart from social activities this year, the Committee is keen to explore a range of sports and exercise opportunities to encourage members to maintain a more active and healthy lifestyle, thanks to funding from the Victorian Disabled Sports Advisory Committee.

The Victorian Council on Fitness and General Health (Vicfit) also provides a free call telephone service that offers personalised support for people wanting help to establish and maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. The Active for Life Infoline is operated by an Exercise Physiologist with extensive experience in assisting people to become more active in the manner best suited to them. The Infoline number is 1800 638 594.

Finally, the Murdoch Children's Research Institute, Gene CRC and University of Melbourne Department of Paediatrics are offering a 2 day Interactive Genetics Workshop entitled "What's in your Genes?" on 24/25 February 2001. Topics include:

Cost, including lunch, refreshments and handbook is $75 (incl. GST) for SSPA members. For further information, contact Eilis Hughes at the MCRI, Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne on 03 8341 6298.

Branch report - June 2001

Dear All,

We are very fortunate here in Victoria to benefit from the close links we enjoy with the Genetics Support Network of Victoria (GSNV) which was established in 1999, funded by the Department of Human Services. SSPA was one of a small number of support groups to join this umbrella group at the outset. The aims of GSNV are:

To resource existing support groups, through seminars, newsletters and information.

To encourage the formation of new support groups.

To educate the community and professionals about genetic conditions and their impact on families and individuals.

To provide consumer feedback to the professional providers of genetic services.

GSNV works closely with the Victorian Clinical Genetics Services based at the Royal Children's Hospital. Now in its second year, it has two staff who handle enquiries from members of the public as well as providing encouragement and resources to assist the numerous genetic support groups which have sprung up (over 60 at the last count). They also organise seminars and workshops on a wide variety of genetic topics and conditions, assist with fundraising and ensure a constant flow of information between genetic support groups, doctors, social workers, counsellors, scientists and the community. It is more important than ever that the GSNV should act as a voice to ensure the community and support groups like ours, have a say in all aspects of the ever-increasing genetic debate.

Dr. Tom Shakespeare who is a full member of the Restricted Growth Association in the UK, and son of one of the founding members, Dr. William Shakespeare, will be in Melbourne during August/September. Dr. Shakespeare has achondroplasia and while in Melbourne he will be presenting at a public forum at the new Museum in Carlton on Wednesday 22 August, commencing at 7pm. Members are also welcome to meet Tom Shakespeare at the home of Caroline Bowditch in Camberwell on Sunday 2 September. For further details check the next Victorian newsletter.

Best regards,

Branch report - August 2001

I would encourage you to come along to this year's AGM and support your committee. The venue this year is at the Royal Children's Hospital and, as an added attraction, we have invited Dr. Tom Shakespeare, Research Development Officer at the Genetics Policy and Ethics Research Institute - International Centre for Life in England, to come along and give us his views on genetic issues. He is a very interesting and provocative speaker and I am sure his presence will enliven the meeting. Tom is also addressing a Public Forum on Wednesday 22 August at the Melbourne Museum.

Another item of interest in the Genetic Services of Victoria (GSNV) update is a two-part seminar on Tuesdays 18th and 25th September, from 6-9pm on the topic "Decision Making Processes for Families Affected by a Genetic Condition". Sessions will cover Medical Decision Making, Social Decision Making, Empowerment and Decision Making Techniques. These sessions will be free to SSPA members. Please call Caroline Bowditch or Eilis Hughes at the GSNV office on (03) 8341-6315 to register.

Just a reminder that the deadline for applications to the Athlete Development Fund is 30th September 2001. Grants of up to $500 are available to full financial members of the SSPA to assist them compete in their nominated sport. If you would like to apply, please contact me for an application form. However, any applications must be endorsed by the SSPA, so please ensure the form is returned to me, once completed.

Branch report - October 2001

At the Victorian AGM, held on 2nd September 2001, the following members were elected:

Office Bearers:

Chairperson:     Rosemary Hobbs
Secretary:         Marilyn Lynch
Treasurer:         Patrick Keane
Parents' Reps:   Cathy Galbraith/Susan Galizi

Committee:     Gail Young                           Social Organisers:
                        Lynne Clayton                       Meredith Young
                        Marie Millard                        Jenny Barrett
                        Megan Lilly
                        Robert Paton
                        Oliver Lynch

The Treasurer's Report for the Year 2001 was accepted, subject to audit.

We are extremely grateful for the continuing financial support from the Victorian Disabled Sports Advisory Committee (VDSAC) through their Athlete Development Fund. The basketball team received in October a further grant of $1000, which will make a significant contribution to their coaching and court hire expenses incurred during the year.

The team has been competing against average-size under 14's in the Port Phillip Junior Basketball Competition since April of this year and players' fitness and skill levels have improved as a result of this regular weekly competition. The end of season dinner honoured Blake Johnston as Most Valuable Player, with runners up - Francis Kelly and Tanya Huebner.

With Xmas almost upon us, parties have been organised for children and adults on 2nd and 8th December respectively.

Branch report - December 2001

The Victorian Group celebrated Melbourne Cup Day at the home of Marilyn & Oliver Lynch on 6th November with a BBQ. Approx. 25 members enjoyed a flutter on the races with the Association benefiting from the profits. Sherryl Johnston organised a raffle and kindly donated prizes. A total of $135 was raised for Association funds.

Children's and Adults' Xmas Parties were held on the 2nd & 8th December respectively but were poorly attended. I do realise that Xmas is a busy time for everyone but the lack of support was very disappointing and demotivating for the organizers who give their time and effort to arrange these events.

In Victoria, the same small core group continue to attend meetings and support social events, while the majority are passive members who only read about the active members in the Journal! The risk of stagnation is high!

As a parent of a short statured person, I have received incredible understanding, support, and friendship through the Association and, in return, I feel that I should give something back! But you don't need to join a committee or organise an event - just come along and support those who do! Become involved and stay involved! Not only will the Association benefit from your support, you will benefit too! The more you give, the more you get, as they say!!!

Your next opportunity to get involved will be the first Group meeting of the year which is traditionally a BBQ held at the home of Jeff & Carol Izatt, 330 Grubb Road (off Bellarine Peninsula), Drysdale, Vic., 3222. Phone: (03) 5255 4077.

Compliments of the season!

2002

Branch report - March 2002

First of all, a big thank-you to Jeff & Carol Izatt for hosting the very popular first meeting of the year. We also have to thank Jeff and his fellow members of the Ocean Grove Snooker Club for their continuing support of the SSPA with their generous donation of $350.

There was a great turnout for the BBQ and the subsequent meeting was extremely lively with lots of ideas and contributions from members. Leza Marsland organised a raffle which raised $62 for Association funds.

Our Social Organiser, Meredith Young, proposed a social calendar for the year with something for everyone. You will get plenty of notice of these upcoming events but we do need member support to make these events successful!

Our grateful thanks to the Victorian Disabled Sports Advisory Committee who have given SSPA a further donation of $1500 for our Sports Development Fund. In addition, their Athlete Development Fund is available to individual members of SSPA to help them with their training and travel costs.

Best wishes,
Marilyn Lynch, Victorian Branch Secretary

Branch report - June 2002

A very big THANK YOU to Rob and Marie Millard for organizing a very successful Trivia Quiz Night on 25 May. This fundraiser attracted over 90 friends and family members, and along with raffles and donations raised over $1000 for SSPA funds.

Our social organiser, Meredith Young has been extremely busy. She is organizing  a Grand Reunion Dinner to celebrate the 30th Anniversary Dinner of the establishment of the VIC Branch of the SSPA, to be held on 6 July. I do hope as many of our members as possible (whether they be past, present or future or just lapsed!), and their families and friends will come along and support this very special occasion.

Two of our junior members have recently received grants from the Athlete Development Fund - Samantha Lilly and Nathan Stewart received $500 each to help them with the training costs involved in their respective sports i.e. taekwondo and indoor cricket. Next round of grants is September 2002, so please contact me for an application form if you are interested.

Oliver Lynch gave a presentation on the role of the SSPA at the first Genetic Support Network Victoria (GSNV) Conference at the Royal Children's Hospital on 3 May. Many thanks to members who came along to support him. The second day of the conference focussed on topics relevant to families with a genetic condition. Support groups had an opportunity to display information about themselves at the Expo, and the picture board, prepared with great skill by Gail Young, was displayed featuring positive images of our members.

Finally, we would like to wish a fond farewell and send our best wishes to Caroline Bowditch, who has given us so much support in her role as Co-ordinator for the GSNV at the Children's Hospital. Caroline is leaving for the UK to be with her fiance, Tom Shakespeare.

Branch report - October 2002

Hello all,

Hope this finds everybody well and happy. The Victorian Group have been active, with many members recently attending the Convention in South Australia. I would like to take this opportunity in thanking the South Australian Group for organising such a wonderful Convention and, on behalf of those who attended from Victoria, in saying that we had a fabulous time.

In other news, the Victorian AGM was held in September at the home of Rosemary, Emma and Sam Hobbs. News arising from the AGM is the appointment of new people to positions such as:

Chairperson:       Meredith Young
Secretary:           Carly Weber
Treasurer:           Patrick Keane
Parent's Reps:     Cathy Galbraith/Susan Galizi

Committee Members: Gail Young, Marilyn Lynch, Rob Paton, Leisa Whitaker,
Jim Whitaker, Rosemary Hobbs, Oliver Lynch, Marie Millard.
Social Committee: Meredith Young, Oliver Lynch, Cathy Galbraith
Auditor:             Malcolm Paton

Personally, I would like to thank Marilyn Lynch for doing an outstanding job as Victorian Secretary for the past six years. She has been a great source of inspiration and help in assisting me to adjust to my position as Secretary. I would also like to thank Rosemary Hobbs for her tireless contribution to the SSPA whether it is on a national or state level, as the now past Chairperson of the Victorian Group. I know Meredith Young will do a great job in her appointment as the new Chairperson  replacing Rosemary. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Meredith on her other role as the new National Secretary for the SSPA. I am sure we all recognise the tremendous amount of work which Vicki Fallon has done in the role as National Secretary, and she certainly deserves a break. Congratulations to all other Victorian newly-elected office-bearers.

On the social scene, as we are heading towards the silly season, firstly; Melbourne Cup Day festivities will be held at the Lynch home on Tuesday 5th November. Our next meeting will be held on Sunday 17th November at the Young residence. This year we will see the combining of the Children's and Adult's Christmas parties, which will be hosted by the Hobbs', on Sunday 1st December. Hope to see as many people at these events as possible as they are always fun to attend.

Best regards to you all,
Carly Weber, Victorian Branch Secretary

2003

Branch report - February 2003

Hope you are all well and enjoyed the festive season. So much has happened within the Victorian branch over the last couple of months. Firstly way back in November we had our annual Melbourne Cup Day BBQ. It was a feverish day full of excitement as the horses bolted down the racetrack and we spectators sat back and relaxed in the lush surrounds of the Lynch's backyard trying to back the winners. Thanks go out to Ollie and Rob for being the bookies for the day. They had their work cut out for them and we were able to raise just over $200. Also in November, we had a branch meeting at the Young residence, where there was much discussion about the proposed 2004 Victorian hosted S.S.P.A. Annual Convention. Phillip Island seems to be the favoured location at the moment, so there may be a bit of penguin spotting.

In December, we had, for the first time, a combined adults and children's Christmas Party held at the Hobbs, which was fantastically attended. Beautiful weather, great company and of course, a sensational location for much merriment, plus a special visit from the jolly fellow in the red suit a.k.a. Santa Claus.

Now on to other news, Gail Young has kindly put together a photo board consisting of positive images of short-statured members, to have as a visual representation of the S.S.P.A. Victorian Branch on display at the Genetic Health Services Clinic and also the Bone Dysplasis Clinic at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne. Interstaters, if you happen to be visiting the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, please check it out next time you are visiting. It is located on the 10th floor.

Our first meeting of the year was the annual BBQ Bash at Carol, Jeff, Carly and Kristen Izatt's home on Sunday 2 February. The weather was wonderful and we had a good attendance.

Branch report - March 2003

Well, the Vic. Branch of the S.S.P.A. have already started the year off in fine form. Having our first meeting of the year at the wonderful Izatt family's spacious home, it was a great day for travelling to our destination via the Queenscliff ferry in car convoy mode. Upon arriving we had a delicious BBQ lunch followed by our meeting, the afternoon tea. News arising from that meeting for the Vic. Branch was a sub-committee was formed to make a decision on what should be done with the money donated to us by the Victorian Disabled Sports Advisory Committee's administration fund, a total amount of $1,500.00. The sub-committee has decided to buy a trailer and a whole lot of different type of sports equipment and miscellaneous accessories such as a BBQ to be used by the S.S.P.A. This trailer as dubbed a 'Life Be In It' type trailer will hopefully be taken to as many as S.S.P.A. events such as the upcoming  Albury/Wodonga weekend, so our members can take part in learning about different sporting activities.

In other news, the SS Spitfires have started up weekly training and matches with other teams in the round-robin Port Phillip competition at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre each Saturday. We wish them all the best for this season.

I had a great time participating recently in a 'banner-making' workshop hosted by the Genetic Network Support Services of Victoria (G.S.N.V.) at the Royal Children's Hospital. The aim was to create a panel representing the S.S.P.A. Vic. Branch and eventually, the panel will be joined to other panels from other organisations, which the G.S.N.V. also help. Thus coming together to make up a banner, which will be officially unfurled at the International Congress of Genetics in July this year, and its permanent home will be in the Royal Children's Hospital. As the G.S.N.V. have so poetically expressed: "It will be a wonderful expression of the diversity within our network, and will highlight our common vision of overcoming genetic challenges." There was a lot more to it than I first thought but I have come up with a design, which I hope is a fair representation of the S.S.P.A. (Vic. Branch). It includes the S.S.P.A.'s old logo with the two trees. It is a bit difficult to explain, but once I am finished I will put a picture of it in the Journal.

Regards,
Carly Weber, Victorian State Secretary

Branch report - June 2003

Greetings and salutations one and all,

Hope this finds you well and in good spirits. Already the year is nearly half over and still so much is in store for the Victorian Branch before the year ends.

In April we held a meeting on a very wet and cold day. Thankfully we were in the comforting and warm surrounds of the Millard's home. Much was discussed, especially the upcoming Albury/Wodonga weekend, which just sounds fantastic. Thanks go to Meredith Young and Leanne Besant for continuing the great tradition. Being introduced at the auspicious weekend for the first time will be the "Life Be In It" trailer, packed full of various sporting equipment for all to enjoy and try out. I hope all of you who are attending the weekend have a great time and a safe journey there and back. Unfortunately I will be stuck at home studying for exams.

Our illustrious Convention committee have decided on a venue where the SSPA national Convention 2004 will be held here in Victoria. It will be at the Phillip Island Adventure Resort, Phillip Island. Appreciation from all of us goes out to Marilyn Lynch for banding the troops together in starting the organising of the Convention, Patrick Keane for doing his wonders with the numbers, Jim Whitaker for spotting a good location and the rest of the committee for their support. We have already begun our fundraising mission organising lots of great social activities for the rest of the year which will incorporate fundraising opportunities.

Other welcoming news was that the SSPA Vic. Branch was awarded a grant of $750.00 from the Department of Human Services "Self Help Funding Program" to finance the printing and distribution of the SSPA information brochure, and also to help finance establishing a membership payment system via credit card on the SSPA website. The people who helped me along with the application and idea are Cathy Galbraith for the great design of the brochure, Megan Lilly, Malcolm Paton, Marilyn Lynch and Rose Hobbs for editing, supply of information and support, thank you so much. Onwards and upwards from here I say!!

Oliver Lynch and Robert Paton will be making their first ever trek over to the USA this June to attend the 2003 Little People's Conference, which will be held in Boston, Massachusetts in July. They both were the recipients of the Victorian Disabled Advisory Committee's March Development Fund Grant, which will enable them to participate in the Dwarf Athletic Games held during the L.P.A. Conference. We wish them all the luck and hope they have a wonderful time over there.

Donations were generously made to the S.S.P.A. A very big thank-you goes to the Ocean Grove Snooker Club who donated $200.00, proceeds from their annual snooker tournament, and also $45.50 was raised from a fun raffle held during the meeting at the Izatt's. Thank-you for those donations organised by Jeff and Carol Izatt.

Carly Weber, Victorian Branch Secretary

Branch report - November 2003

Hello everyone,

I hope that you are all well.

It has been a busy past couple of months for the Victorian branch. Firstly we had our Annual General Meeting held at the newly renovated house of the Lilly's and as usual our AGM was jam packed full of discussion. We have a few new faces appointed in various positions in the Victorian Branch and also some changes to the normal structure.

They are as follows:

Chairperson: Meredith Young
Secretary: Carly Weber
Treasurer: Patrick Keane
Parent Representatives: Please note that this now consists of a collection of parents who positively represent our Association who are either, themselves of short stature or average height and have children of various short statured conditions and ages. They are:
Robert and Marie Millard, Susan Galizi, Cathy Galbraith, Megan and Leon Lilly, Gail Young and Leza Daniels.
Also including Margaret Sahhar from the Bone Dysplasia Clinic at the R.C.H. and Eilis Hughes of the G.S.N.V.
Sub-Committee: Helen Killeen, Gail Young, Rob Paton, Marilyn Lynch, Oliver Lynch, Marie Millard, Leon Lilly and Rosemary Hobbs.
Social Committee: Helen Killeen, Oliver Lynch, Samantha Lilly, Samuel Hobbs, Sam Millard and Rob Paton.

I would like to congratulate all those who are now in the above positions. I cannot endorse it enough to actively be a part of this organization. This not only benefits its members on a whole, but also and more importantly it benefits you, the individual, as you learn so many new skills contributing, but also learn so much more about this fantastic organisation. I would also like to acknowledge both Cathy Galbraith's and Susan Galizi's sharing contribution to the position of parent representatives for the past couple of years. I have personally enjoyed reading their articles submitted to the Journal with helpful tips for parents and their children of short stature. I know if I had some of the modifications they have suggested for primary school, that time would have been a lot easier for me.

Our annual National Convention, which was held in Canberra this year was also a fantastic time to renew old acquaintances and make new friends. Unfortunately, due to university commitments, I was only able to attend for two days and I personally got a lot of enjoyment out of my short visit, but from what I hear the whole week was just a wonderful celebration of our organisation and why we come together each year to acknowledge this and gain so much more from being a part of it. Congratulations go to Angela Badalassi and Peter Corcoran for organising such a groovy convention. Next Year it is Victoria's turn and are we excited  about hosting the Convention down at Phillip Island. Thanks to Marilyn and her Convention crew the plans for it are all nicely coming together. We have many fantastic fundraising gatherings coming up, which include the annual Melbourne Cup Day BBQ, the most magnificent annual Trivia Night and also a trash and treasure sale.

Until next time,
Carly Weber, Victorian Branch Secretary

2004

Branch report - January 2004

Seasons Greetings One and All,

Well, you would think as we come closer to the end of the year activities and such things would slow down. No siree!

The SSPA Victorian Branch was ever so busy during the month of November. Firstly, the annual Melbourne Cup Day BBQ brought us all together for an afternoon of social merriment with bets being placed on the horses, followed by knuckle biting anticipation to see whether our horses had won a place. All proceeds made from the bets placed will go towards the planning of the 2004 National Convention. $190.00 was raised. A big thank-you goes to Marie and Rob Millard for hosting the BBQ.

Mid-way through November we held our marvellous annual Trivia Night kindly organised by Rob and Marie Millard, and compered by Leon Lilly. Thank you for all contributions. From all accounts it was a fun and successful night in raising $1098.00 towards the 2004 National Convention.

In late November we held our last Branch meeting for the year. Mostly discussed items were activities organised and future fundraising opportunities for the 2004 National Convention.

Finally, The Victorian Branch capped off the year with our adults and children's combined Christmas party. Though only a small attendance it was enjoyable day with a special visit from Santa.

Just a couple of special mentions before I sign off - Rob Payton, Oliver Lynch and myself were very honoured to attend the Victorian Disabled Sports Advisory Committee's AGM. We were overwhelmed by the staggering amount of work they do in integrating and providing sporting opportunities for people with disabilities. Rob and Ollie did a presentation on their recent trip to Boston participating in the Dwarf Athletic Games.  Lindsay Gaze of the Melbourne Tigers graciously introduced them both with anecdotes on his basketball experiences and his admiration for our basketball team - the SS Spitfires.

May I take this opportunity to say that the SS Spitfires came second in the Port Phillip Round Robin under 12's competition for this season. Our congratulations to the team, well done!

Another affiliated association, the Genetic Network Services of Victoria held a "dealing with the media" workshop which Oliver Lynch and I attended. It was to inform us about how to use the media to our advantage in getting our message across in a positive way.

I must emphasize how important it is to recognize these two organisations who assist us so generously. We look forward to strengthening our bonds with the VDSAC and the GSNV in the forthcoming new year.

Best wishes to you all,

Carly Weber, Victorian Branch Secretary

Branch report - March 2004

The SSPA Vic. Branch are already in full spring for 2004, starting off with our annual beginning of the year social get together and meeting held at the Izatt’s home. It was a fantastic day, with a large convoy of people and cars making their way down to Portsea to catch the ferry over to Queenscliff. After the 40 minute ferry ride we all took off to the Izatt’s place in Wallington. What a turn out we had! So many people and so much to discuss.

We have a full year ahead of us of activities and planning for the convention in Phillip Island, at the Phillip Island Adventure Resort. The convention was the most talked about item on the agenda, as much of the activities planned for the year will revolve around fundraising for the convention. Marilyn spoke about the proposed social events geared up for fundraising and also the activities planned for the week of the convention (though these are subject to change), such as a cocktail/mocktail party, viewing of the AFL grand final from the convention site, a trip to the Wonthaggi Coal Mine, the classy annual dinner dance, a trip to the surf school and a lawn bowls competition, also the tri-state basketball match, a big production involving all our artistically inclined members and if that isn’t enough how about a disco and a karaoke night….Phew!! We have a fun week ahead of us.

Thank you so much to Jeff, Carol, Carly and Kristen Izatt for hosting a lovely day out.

Regards,
Carly Weber, Vic Secretary.

Branch report - June 2004

Hello everybody I hope you are all well.

Recently on a pleasant Autumn afternoon the Victorian group held their second branch meeting for the year at Maxine and Jack Mitchell's house. A very big thank-you goes to Maxine and Jack for hosting a lovely afternoon. It was a lively meeting with lots of good news to share. First off, Meredith Young our Chairperson, announced that one of our Victorian members is going to Athens to compete in the Paralympics. Sarah Bowen competed in the recent swimming trials in Sydney and she won gold in the 100 metres breaststroke Multi-Disability setting a new world record at 1:44.56. This time was set in the heats by Sarah. She also won gold in the 50 metres backstroke Multi-Disability. Another world record set in heats - 48.06, and broke her own world record in the finals - 47.48 and she also won silver in the 50 metre breaststroke Multi-Disability and set a new world record in the heats - 46.95. We cannot congratulate enough Sarah, we are all very proud of you and wish you all the best in Athens.

Patrick Keane our State Treasurer gave details of generous monetary dontations which have come in. We have received a donation of $12.71 from Ritchies Supermarkets from their Community Benefit Fund. Also we received a dontation of $200 from the Ocean Grove Snooker Club. Thank you to the Ocean Grove Snooker Club and especially Jeff Izatt for organizing this generous donation from the clubs yearly snooker tournament.

Other good news to share - Leza Daniels has been busily rounding up donations for our Annual Gala Dinner Fundraiser. She has successfully secured donations, such as a $100 lunch voucher for two at Mitchellton Restaurant, Nagambi; 4 x Stitches Books; McDonalds food vouchers; 50 posters from the Melbourne Zoo; $250 cash donation from Safety Steel Structures; Mystery package from Portrait Place; plus other donations still yet to be confirmed. A very big thank you to Leza for seeking out fantastic donations to help with fund raising for the 2004 SSPA National Convention.

Of course there was an update on the 2004 SSPA National Convention. Back in March, Marilyn and Oliver Lynch; Megan, Leon and Charlie Lilly; Patrick Keane, Rosemary Hobbs, Gail Young and myself all made the trek down to Philip Island for investigative purposes to check out all the activities to do during the week of the convention and sourcing a posh venue for our dinner dance. A big thank you must go to Marilyn Lynch for organizing the successful weekend and of course those who attended only did so for strictly investigative purposes and not social!!!

The basketball report read out by Meredith Young was very encouraging. The Sspitfires are doing very well in the Port Philip under 12's Round Robin competition, in which they compete on Saturday afternoons at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. Please call Meredith on 9555 7676 if you would like to play or spectate. Leza Daniels thanked Leon Lilly for his support and time given in coaching the Sspitfires and attending their games. Leon has been a stalwart supporter of the basketball team since they began. He has always been there for coaching advice, tips, and most of all, offering encouragement to each of the team members. Thank you to Leon Lilly.

The meeting ended with an outing, organised by Maxine Mitchell, to visit a fantastic little business called "The Wheelchair Man". It is a shop providing products for personal and household use for people who have mobility difficulties. Sometimes it is nice to make your life a little more easier and simpler by having an implement which can assist you.

The winners of the Easter Raffle are - 1st prize: Rob & Marie Millard; 2nd prize: John & Margaret Davidson; and 3rd prize: Leza & Paul Daniels. Congratulations to you all and I hope you have recovered from the sugar rush!!

Recently, Marilyn Lynch, Patrick Keane and myself have been filling in a grant applications, in the hope that if we secure one grant we will be able to provide not just a fantastic Convention week but to also take the pressure off fundraising. So please everyone keep your fingers crossed!!! I would like to thank Marilyn and Patrick for their help and support with these grant applications - the more we do the more experience we get!!!

To end, I would like thank in advance Marie Millard and Gail Young for both volunteering in helping me put out the next newsletter, which is due out mid June as I will be overseas for five weeks from June 11th until July 16th.

Regards,
Carly Weber, Vic Secretary.

Branch report - August 2004

Hello everyone,

Most of you know I will be overseas from June 11th until July 16th seeing my family in Germany and attending the Little People of America conference in San Francisco.

Those of you who have just returned back from the Albury/Wodonga weekend I hope you all had a marvelous time there.  A very big thank you goes to Meredith Young, Michael Blair (NSW) and Leanne Besant for organising the weekend.

I also would like to thank Shaun, Cathy, Hailey and Ellie Galbraith for hosting the June branch meeting which occurred the weekend after Albury. I am guessing a lot of photos were passed around and  highlights from the weekend were talked about.

Well a lot has happened since the last newsletter We are a busy bunch down here in Victoria.  Firstly, Mark Geaghan and Meredith Young of the SS Spitfires were the recipients of the Victorian Disabled Sports Advisory Committee March Grants, receiving $500.00 each.  Thank you to the VDSAC for their continuous support of our members participating in sporting activities.

A huge thank you to Malcolm Paton for bringing to my attention the available grant for National Disability Conference Funding.  From this we received $2500 to assist us with our planning for the 2004 convention. The Genetic Support Network of Victoria granted us $200.00 from their GSNV Special Projects Grants to go towards organising the Medical Day as part of the forthcoming Annual SSPA Convention.  We would like to say thank you to the GSNV for this generous grant. We appreciate it immensely.

Back in May we held our trash n’ treasure sale on a cold day in St. Kilda when we managed to raise $300.00.  I received so much help on the day and I would like to thank Marilyn Lynch, Oliver Lynch, Rob Paton, Peter Spain, Jenny & Shayne Barrett and all those who donated their pre-loved goods.

Recently, we held our annual fun night, the Trivia Night!  This has always been an amazing fundraising event and this year was no exception. The door takings on the night were $730.00, the Coin Toss raised $72.00, there was a kind donation of $50.00, the raffle proceeds on the night were $234.40 and the sale of cards made by Leza Daniels added up to $35.00, so all up the total amount raised on the night was.............drum roll...........$1121.40, which is a MAGNIFICENT effort.  A very big thank you goes out to Rob and Marie Millard for their magnificent efforts in organising the night, the very professional quiz master, his assistants and their audio equipment, donations for the raffle and spot prizes, the catering and the clearing up afterwards.  Marilyn Lynch, Patrick Keane and Lesa Daniels, thank you for your help also on the night, it is all greatly appreciated.  Please take note all money raised this year will be going towards organising for the Annual SSPA Convention to be held at the Phillip Island Adventure Resort, Phillip Island 25th Sept. until 1st Oct.

Our next event for the Victorian branch is the AGM.   I will be standing down as secretary due to commitments in my life and wanting to concentrate on other parts of the S.S.P.A. It has been an incredible experience over the past two years undertaking this position. I have learnt so much from it and I encourage those who may be interested in being secretary to speak up.  I can’t emphasise enough that taking up a position in the SSPA is such a positive experience. It not only gets you more involved on a supportive level but it also gives you so much vocational experience.

Kind regards to all of you,

Carly Weber
Victorian Branch Secretary.

Branch report - September 2004

Hello everyone,

There is excitement in the air for the Victorian Branch as we are only weeks away from the convention down at Phillip Island and the last couple of months have been busy...busy...busy for us with last minute fundraising and organising.

The last branch meeting was held at the home of Shaun, Cathy, Hailey and Ellie Galbraith and of course talk of the convention dominated most of the meeting.  Marilyn Lynch tabled a report to discuss last minute details. Thanks must go to Marilyn’s partner, John Hayes, for his kind offer to organise the mail out of the convention registration packs through his company. Registration packs were sent out to present and past members and to Genetic Clinics contacts so we could reach out to as many people as possible who may be interested in coming along to the convention. A very, very big thank you to John and his company for their very kind help and also helping Marilyn stuff the envelopes too!!

While we are on the subject of the convention I would like to take the opportunity to thank Marilyn Lynch and her band of helpers in organising a jam packed full o' fun convention! Also, thanks Marilyn for taking the minutes of the meeting for me whilst I was gallivanting around the USA, and thank you to the Galbraiths for hosting the meeting.

Recently we held our Annual Gala Dinner to celebrate this wonderful organisation.  Approximately 80 of us gathered at the Three Crowns Hotel in North Melbourne on a cold Melbourne winter’s evening. We had two overseas guests attend as well - Jonathan Tripp all the way from New Zealand and Varsha Patel even further away from San Francisco, U.S.A. it really made our night having them both attend as our guests. We used the occasion as an opportunity to help fundraise for the 2004 SSPA Convention by holding auctions both silent and vocal, raffles and monetary donations on the nights. My goodness did we have some fabulous items up for grabs all.  Thank you to all our Vic members who generously donated or organised donations  You certainly helped make the night the wonderful success it was! All money raised on the night from profits made from the dinner, Silent and Vocal Auctions, Cards, Donations and Raffle totalled: $4,476.25.

Many thanks also to all the helpers on the night such as Rob and Marie Millard, Merry and Gail Young, Leon and Megan Lilly, Marilyn Lynch and Patrick Keane.

The SS Spitfires have been playing their best games yet! Winning most of their matches played as part of the Port Phillip Round Robin under 12's league. The team also have the most  players signed up and dedicated to play each Saturday at MSAC, with many of the new players being younger members.

Most recently we held our AGM for the Victorian Branch and we now have new office bearers and they are:
Chairperson - Meredith Young
Secretary - Helen Killeen
Treasurer - Patrick Keane
Parent Representatives - Megan and Leon Lilly, Marie and Rob Millard, Cathy Galbraith, Susan Galizi, Lesa and Paul Daniels and Gail Young
Committee - Gail Young, Marie Millard, Marilyn Lynch, Oliver Lynch, Rose Hobbs, Mark Geaghan, Rob Paton, Leon Lilly, Carly Weber and Peter Spain.
Youth Committee - Sarah Whitaker, Chloe Whitaker, Tim Whitaker, Michael Spain, Samantha Lilly, Sam Millard, Sam Hobbs, Kristen Izatt

My congratulations to all the above position holders. I especially would like to congratulate Helen Killeen on being the new secretary I wish you all the best and I know you will do a fantastic job as secretary.

Signing off......over and out,

Carly Weber
Retired secretary of the Victorian Branch

Branch report - November 2004

Hello All,

Victoria has had a pretty busy last couple of months. As most of you would knowwe held the annual Convention at Phillip Island in September. What a wonderful week it was. With the largest attendance at a Convention, the atmosphere was delightful. It was so encouraging to see so many new faces and new families as well as seeing the old ones too. The organisers of the Convention should feel very proud of their efforts because the product was a perfect week. Filled with activities that were enjoyed by all. The only bad thing about the Convention was that it had to come to an end.

The Victorian basketball team, SS Spitfires are still playing basketball every week at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. If anyone is interested in playing or watching they are more than welcome. We played in the Grand Final for the Winter season. We were winning in the first quarter, only to lose in the second half. Michael Spain has been added to the team list, and he is showing a lot of enthusiasm, which is great to see. Samantha Lilly shot her first goal in a game which was wonderful to be part of.

The Melbourne group got together for their annual Melbourne Cup get-together on 2nd November. It was held at the Lilly's household this year. It was sure a great day, and some were successful with the betting.

The first general meeting after the Convention was held at Jenny and Shayne Barrett's house on 7th November. It was a good turn-out for those who came.

Regards,
Helen Killeen

2005

Branch report - January 2005

Hello one and all,

The Victorian Branch has been pretty quiet since our Christmas parties but that’s all about to change.  There is so much on the agenda for 2005.

Our first get together was held at the Millard’s on the 23rd of January it was such a perfect day, with the sun shining, great company and a pool - what else could you ask for.

We will all meet up again on the 4th to 5th February for a surfing weekend which coincides with our first meeting for the year. We have about 20 people taking part in the surfing on the beaches of Queenscliff, and no doubt a lot of spectators too. That night the good times will roll onto a Mexican restaurant for dinner. Sunday is the Branch meeting which will be held at the Izatt’s residence –22 Grubb Rd, Wallington.

The Victorian Branch will also be looking forward to the Nhill weekend to be held
from 12th to 14th March. The weekend will include sporting events and visiting the local Nhill attractions. The highlight of the weekend will then be celebrating both Karyn and Sean’s 40th birthdays. If anyone wants more details about the weekend they can contact: Karyn McCartney (03) 5391 3210 or Patrick Keane (03) 9749 6646 (if no answer, will divert to mobile) for info.

Also scheduled in the Victorians diary is a Trivia Night to fundraise for Jenny Angliss-Goodall so she can get some ‘new wheels’ i.e. a new wheelchair. If anyone is interested in attending, it’s being held on 26th February at: 7.30pm at St. John Vianni Hall, Police Rd, Mulgrave (Melways Ref 80 B5) Cost: $10 per head ,  BYO Nibbles, drinks & glasses. RSVP Marie 9700 1538.

Our other big event for the year is a Debutant Ball. It’s sure to be a night to remember. The purpose of the event is to allow those who never made their deb when they were younger to have that chance now. A good excuse to get dressed up to the nines and feel like a princess for a night.

So 2005 is going to be such a socially active year for the Victorian branch. If anyone wants more information on events Merry does a great job of updating the website so check it out http://vic.sspa.asn.au

I hope all is well with everyone,

Helen Killeen,
Victorian Secretary

Branch report - April 2005

Hello one and all,

It’s been a pretty active couple of months for the Vic branch.  The social committee have been busy coming up with great opportunities enabling members and friends to catch up with one another.  The fun is not set to slow down anytime soon either.

Most recently the Vic Group enjoyed a weekend away in Nhill.  Karyn and Sean McCartney both celebrated their 40th Birthdays with a bash.  It was a perfect chance for those from Adelaide and Melbourne to meet up half way for a weekend away together.  Thanks must go to Sean, Karyn and Patrick for organising the weekend that left everyone wanting to go back again. The activities during the weekend included riding on GoKarts, tractors and motorbikes. There was sheep shearing demonstration and yabbying in the dam.  There was also a basketball match between the Tallies and Short Statured people; and much more.

Back in late February the Sspitfires Basketball team held an Award Presentation Night. Most players were in attendance.  Blake Johnston was awarded Most Valuable Player. Unfortunately after Blake received his award he announced his retirement from the game due to other commitments. Blake’s goal shooting skills will be missed on the court.  All other players were presented with awards for their contribution to the team.  Leon Lilly and Lyn Clayton were also thanked for their time and input to the team; players are most grateful for their contribution.

Also on the Agenda for the year is the Annual Albury Weekend.  This is always a fun weekend that gives people from NSW and Victoria a chance to catch up. It would be great to see many faces there because it’s always a fun packed weekend.  The Vic’s are also hosting the SSPA Inaugural Debutant Ball, which is bound to be a night to remember.

The next general meeting for the Vic group is on the 1st of May at 2pm at the Millard’s esidence- 2 Little Boy Rise, Endeavour Hills.

Thanks,
Helen Killeen
Vic Secretary

Branch report - June 2005

Hello All,

I hope this finds everyone well. Most of the Victorian Group has just got back from a wonderful weekend in Albury. The numbers weren’t as high as past years however that didn’t dampen any fun had by all. During the weekend there were lots of sports being played, the main focus from the games wasn’t about being on the winning side as much this year but more so just getting out and having a go. More people got up and played and had fun than previously. Hockey seemed to be the most enjoyed by all.  There was also soccer and basketball too. As well on offer during the weekend was catching up with friends, new and old. Hopefully next year we see more people there, as it is such a great weekend for all.

The Debutant Ball is fast approaching, so people taking part in that have been busy learning their dance steps for the big night. It’s so good to see people from all over Australia wanting to be a part of the Deb. This will be an event not to miss; so if you’re thinking of coming down to Victoria try and get down for this one.

The SSspitfires basketball team are still continually playing basketball every Saturday.  We’ve had a couple of close matches and even a win when we last played.

Regards,
Helen Killeen

Branch report - December 2005

Hello everyone,

It’s been rather busy down here the past couple of months! Just recently we held a day at the Lilly’s to celebrate Melbourne Cup. From all accounts it was a very successful day, which saw two new families attend.

In October the Whitakers held a general meeting. Much discussion was concentrated on this years Christmas parties and upcoming events. This year the Victorian Kids Christmas party will be spent sailing at Lysterfield park - this is sure to be an event for all to have a go at!  Following the success of the Adults Christmas party in 2004, we’ve decided to return to the same venue this year. All are welcome to attend! Hope to see a lot of faces at both of the events.

Other then that it’s just getting prepared to start the New Year.

Hope all is well,

Helen Killeen

2006

Branch report - March 2006

Hello Everyone,

I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and that the New Year brings much happiness to you all. 2005 was such a wonderful year to be involved in the Victorian Branch of the SSPA.  The Debutante Ball was my personal highlight of the year - what a night that was!  The weekend away in Nhill was also such a memorable experience.  2006 looks promising to be another successful year, with some new families showing interest in the association late last year.  Hopefully the Victorian branch can grow with this new interest.

Late last year the Sspitfires held a Presentation Night to acknowledge the players and coaches for their continuous contributions to the team.  Jonathon Tripp and Sam Millard received MVP awards.  Samantha Lilly was awarded the most improved player award while Francis Kelly received an award for scoring the most goals during the season.  Also during the night, Leon Lilly was thanked for all his input into the team over the years.  New coach Marg was awarded a thank you gift for all she’s done this year for the team.  The Sspitfires played in their grand final game prior to the presentation night.  I think all would agree it was the best game of the year.  Unfortunately the game was lost by a very minor 3 points.  Sspitfires will resume play soon at MSAC and also hope to start training.  Maybe they can topple their opponents at the next grand final! Any interested short statured members who would like to play with the Sspitfires (must be 13 or over) please contact Meredith Young on (03) 9555 7676.

On 3 December the Victorian branch held their Christmas parties.  The kids Christmas party kicked of with Sailability at Lysterfield Park.  A big thank you must go out to the people from Sailability who came and helped out during the day.  Although it was freezing cold and wet it didn’t dampen any of the festivities.  Most people who attended the day had a go at sailing on the boats.  Everyone seemed to figure out how to use the sails to direct them where they wanted to go, that is, everyone except Jim and myself. Jim and I had no clue but we still had a great time.  Thanks must also be given to Rob Millard for organising the day.  Meredith also did a great job of providing lots of on-land games.  We were entertained by a game of soccer, three legged races, egg and spoon races and much more.  Two new families attended the day, which was terrific to see.  That night, the adults had their turn to celebrate what a wonderful year 2005 was and partied the night away at the Noble Park R.S.L.

I hope to catch up with you all soon,

Helen Killeen

Branch report - July 2006

Hello All,

The Victorian group has had a couple of get-togethers recently.  Firstly there was our Annual Magnificent Trivia Night. The night was a huge success with around 100 people in attendance; raised funds tipped the $1200 mark. The night was not only about trivia it was full of fun and catching up with everyone on the night. Rob Millard did a great job of organising it along with getting all the prizes.

Many Victorians also made the trip up to Albury for the Annual Sporting Weekend. What a wonderful weekend it was. This year’s weekend saw people from the ACT and Queensland also attend. There was a high level of talent with all the sporting events from everyone that took part.

Next to come on the Victorian Branch agenda is the Grand Gala Dinner. The night will include a silent auction and all money made to go towards the 2007 Port Macquarie Convention. The night has attracted attention from people from other states as well, which is fantastic to see, the more the merrier. Following the Gala Dinner is our General Meeting; this has been arranged for those travelling to be able to come to both the dinner and meeting.

The Victorian AGM is planned to be for the 27th of August at the home of the Lilly’s. On the 30th July, there will be a Parents Afternoon get-together. The last parent’s get-together was such a success that saw four new families attend.

Thanks,

Helen Killeen

Branch report - December 2006

Hi all,

First off I would like to introduce myself, my name is Jonathon Tripp and I am the new Victorian State Branch Secretary. I am 27 years old and have Hypoachondroplasia. I currently live in Melbourne with my girlfriend Meredith; however I am originally from Auckland, New Zealand. I’ve recently been overseas travelling around Europe and the U.K, which you can read about in this edition of the SSPA journal, and I would like to thank Helen Killeen for filling my shoes whilst I was away.

The Victorian branch has recently held their adults and children’s Christmas parties. Both were held on the one weekend to try and attract interstate and regional members, which proved to be quite successful. The adult’s party was held in a function room at the Mulgrave Country Club, where a two course meal and plenty of dancing was enjoyed by all. The children’s and teens party was held at Hayes Paddock, where everyone participated in a range of sports and games, and even included a visit from Santa Claus.

As we come to the end of another very successful year for the Victorian branch, we’ve got plenty to look forward to in 2007. On the 3rd and 4th of February we have our Surfing Weekend, which will involve surfing and dinner at The Mex on Saturday, followed by the first meeting for 2007 at the home of the Izatt family on Sunday. All enquiries to Meredith Young on (03) 9555 7676.

The Sspitfires will resume playing in February 2007, and hope to continue their great form in the coming season. Our gratitude goes to the Town Hall Hotel in South Melbourne for their generous sponsorship and to Marg Daly our wonderful coach, who commits her Saturday’s to the team every week. We can’t thank you enough.

Otherwise this summer will see picnics, pool parties and regular meetings. Please stay tuned to the Victorian Branch website at
www.vic.sspa.asn.au. Any suggestions for events throughout the year, please don’t hesitate to contact me via email at jonot@b-and-f-papers.co.nz or telephone on (03) 9555 7676.

Until next time….

Branch report - February 2007

Hi all,

The Victorian Branch recently enjoyed their annual surfing weekend which was held on the weekend of 3–4 February 2007 at Ocean Grove beach. The waves weren’t as good as last year, but the tricks were still outstanding and plenty of fun was had by all. Surfers had plenty of confidence by the end of the day showing off with doing headstands and hanging five or ten. That night we had a great turnout at “The Mex”, where we all had a very delicious Mexican meal.

The following day we had our first General Meeting, which was held at the Izatt’s residence. A big thank you goes out to Carol, Jeff and Kristin for their kind hospitality.

The Sspitfires basketball team start their 2007 season off on Saturday 21st of April. The team would love your support at the games. The games start at either 2:40pm or 3:30pm on Saturdays.

We’ve got a pool party coming up on Sunday 4 March at the Millard’s place in Endeavour Hills and a picnic planned for Sunday 25 March with a BBQ lunch and plenty of games organised. Plenty of fun to be had!

Branch report - August 2007

Hello all,

As this will be my final report for the Journal as Victorian State Secretary, I’d like to thank the Victorian group for nominating and supporting me over the past year. This has been a great experience and I’m glad that I could finally give something back to the SSPA for all the support and great times that I’ve experienced over the past few years.

I’d also like to say a big thank you to everyone who puts in tremendous amounts of effort and hours in organising events for the SSPA. You all know who you are, and if it wasn’t for you, most of the exciting events organised would never happen. Your regular support over the years has been tremendous, and as Victorian Secretary, I would like to thank you all on behalf of the Victorian Branch.

Thanks to these people, some of the events we’ve seen this year have included:

·                     a surfing weekend away at Ocean Grove, where after last year’s success, we followed up with another day of surfing. Plenty of fun was had by all, and some surfers even managed to pull off a trick or two.

·                     the Annual Trivia Night & Gala Dinner, where members and their friends donated and delved into their pockets to raise much needed funds for the 40th National Convention. We managed to fundraise over $6,000 this year.

·                     the SSPA Symposium, where an informative day was had by all, with doctors and genetic councillors speaking about the new advancements in technology, along with SSPA members talking about their own journeys through life.

·                     SSPA Sporting Weekend in Albury, where not only soccer and hockey were played, but the rivalry basketball game between NSW and Victoria returned. Victoria came out on top, but only by two points and great sportsmanship was demonstrated by both teams.

I’m sure during 2007-2008 we’ll witness another very eventful and enjoyable year.

Up and coming events for the Victorian Branch include:

Tenpin Bowling Night: To coincide with our AGM, a tenpin bowling night has been organised for Saturday 25 August at Moorabbin AMF Bowl, 938 Nepean Hwy, Moorabbin. Bowling will commence at 7.00pm. Please contact Jonathon on (03) 9555 7676 if you’d like to come along.

AGM: Notice is hereby given that the 2007 Annual General Meeting of the Victorian Branch will take place on Saturday 26 August at the Young’s residence (35 Marrbridge Road, Moorabbin). The meeting will commence at 2.00pm. At the AGM all current committee members will stand down, all positions will become vacant and will then be re-elected. Those wishing to stand for a position must be over 18 years of age and a current financial member of the SSPA. Your attendance at this meeting is very important.

Melbourne Cup Day – Tuesday 6 November, at the home of the Koedyk’s.

Sspitfires Presentation Night – Saturday 17 November, at the Town Hall Hotel.

Dates for the Christmas Parties - Can you believe that we’re already in the midst of planning these events? This Christmas we’re looking at doing something a little different... so please keep your diaries free for the following dates:

Adults Christmas Party: Saturday 8 December 2007

Children’s & Teens Christmas Party: Sunday 9 December 2007

Further details regarding these events will be available on the SSPA Victorian Branch website at www.vic.sspa.org.au.

Branch report - September 2007

On Saturday 25th August, the Victorian Branch held a Ten Pin Bowling night to coincide with the AGM. We had a great turnout with having enough people to bowl on four lanes. It was great to some new faces, along with the regulars, and there was plenty of fun had by all.

The Victorian Branch had their AGM on Sunday 26th August. All past Committee members stood down, and new appointed positions were elected. On behalf of the Victorian Branch, I’d like to thank the 2006-2007 Committee members for their great work over the past year.

The following members were appointed the following positions:

Chairperson: Anthony Koedyk
Secretary:
Jonathon Tripp
Treasurer:
Patrick Keane

Note: Patrick stated that he is training up Oliver Lynch as Treasurer, as Patrick might stand down after the Convention, depending on his workload. As not only has he been Treasurer for the Victorian Group, he’s also been the Treasurer for the Convention Committee as well. So on behalf of the Victorian Branch I’d like to thank you Patrick for all your great work with juggling both jobs – “magnificent”.

Parent Representatives:        Megan & Leon Lilly, Marie & Rob Millard, Malcolm & Laurice Paton, Leisa & Jim Whitaker

Victorian Committee:             Margherita Coppolino, Rose Hobbs, Helen Killeen, Megan Lilly, Oliver Lynch, Marie & Rob Millard, David Murn, Rob Paton, Carly Myers,

Youth Committee:                  Ping Fang, Samantha Lilly, Sam Millard, Stefano Salemme, Mike Spain, Sarah Whitaker

Social Coordinators:               Helen Killeen, Rob Millard, Meredith Young

This year we agreed to do it “Brownlow” style, where each week the umpires gave their 3, 2 and 1 votes. It came down to the wire in the end between Meredith Young and Jonathon Tripp, but Jonathon just managed to come out on top, taking out the M.V.P. award. Mike Spain won the Coach’s award for most improved player.

·        The Melbourne Cup day was held at the home of Koedyk’s and was a great success, not only in the turnout, but we also managed to raise $99.50 for the Victorian branch. A big thank you goes to Gus, Eileen and Anthony for hosting the event and for their great hospitality.
