We have had our Christmas Party held at the Gladesville Bowling Club, which was a resounding success. Quite a number of members and friends came and made the night a most enjoyable one. The food was exceptional and the music great. A big thank you to all who attended.
We also held our children's party at Apple Tree Bay, Bobbin Head on Sunday 5th December with a special person making an appearance (Santa Claus).
Also on our agenda over the next few months is the search for a suitable place to hold the 2001 Convention. We have several people looking into this, and hope by mid-2000 to have settled on a site.
Our next meeting will be held at Michelle Mossie's home, Townhouse 3, 54 Lang Street, Padstow at 11 am.
Hope everyone has a safe and happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year.
Muriel Cottrell, NSW Branch Secretary
Hi Everyone,
Just to let you all know that we in NSW are going well. We are in the process of looking for a suitable venue for the 2001 Convention which is due to be held in our State and so members of the Convention Committee have been buzzing around different locations to work out the pros and cons of each site. As soon as we know their decision, we shall let you all know.
We are holding a Christmas in July dinner on 15th July at the Gladesville Bowling Club (thanks Vivien) and due to GST, etc., the cost will be kids 5 years old and under - free, children 6 to 12 - $10, and everyone else - $22. It will be the usual start time of 6 pm to 12 midnight and we shall be having raffles, etc. to try and boost our finances. So please come along, bring friends and relatives and have a great evening. Don't forget your dancing shoes!!
We have also made a booking for our Christmas Party which is being held on 25th November 2000 also to be held at the Gladesville Bowling Club at the same time and cost. The Children's Picnic Christmas Party will be held on a date and place to be decided at our next meeting.
Our next meeting in NSW will be held at the home of Vivien McKee, 18 Gerrish Street Gladesville at 2pm with a party to be held afterwards for Robert McKee. Everyone is to bring their own drinks, and let Muriel know if you are going. That's all the news for now. We shall see all of you who are going to the Albury weekend there on the long weekend in June.
Regards,
Muriel Cottrell, NSW Branch Secretary
Firstly, a reminder about our "Christmas in July" Dinner/Dance to be held at the Gladesville Bowling Club at 6 pm on July 15th. Everyone is welcome, so bring along friends, relatives, neighbours and whoever else you want for a night of great music, dancing, and exceptional food. Cost is $25.00 per head for adults 18 and over, children and teenagers from 6 to 17 years of age, $15.00 per head and all children 5 and under, free.
Our committee has also decided on a venue for the N.S.W. based Convention in the year 2001. It will be held at the Fitzroy Falls Conference Centre. which is near Moss Vale and also near Bowral. So everyone please make note of this and of course we shall be in contact with everyone as the year goes on and our turn in NSW comes to host the next Convention in the year 2001.
Hope everyone is well in the rest of the country and looking forward to seeing as many as possible at the "Christmas in July" Dinner/Dance.
We will be holding our AGM on the Sunday, 6th August, at 11 am followed by a BBQ at the Cottrell's residence.
Kind regards,
Muriel Cottrell, NSW Branch Secretary

Our Children's/Adults Christmas Party will be held on 9th December 2000 at the Gladesville Bowling Club starting at 6pm. Please make note of this. The Children's Christmas Party will be held on Saturday 2nd December at 11am at Apple Tree Bay (The same place as last year). Don't forget there will be an entry fee to the National Park and we expect it to be around the $10.00 (?). Also, there is a present from Santa for the children who have been good.
Regards to all members. We unfortunately will not be able to attend the Victorian Convention but we certainly hope everyone has a good time!
Muriel Cottrell, NSW Branch Secretary
We had our Christmas Parties at the end of last year and both the one at the Gladesville Bowling Club and the children's one at Apple Tree bay, Bobbin Head, were very successful.
We have a Trivia night organized for 3 March at the Bundilla Training Centre, Winston Hills, beginning at 7.30 pm. We are hoping as many people as possible attend as we are holding this year's Convention and we need to build up our resources.
Our next meeting will be held at the Lane Cove National Park on Sunday 11 March, where we will be incorporating a picnic day with a meeting to follow. We are also hoping for a good attendance here.
That is about all we have to report at the moment, and hopefully our next report will advise more about the Convention.
Regards,
Muriel Cottrell, NSW Branch Secretary
Well we've not long returned home from a wonderful long weekend in Albury. It was lovely to see everyone again, and I can't imagine that anyone who attends this weekend would not enjoy themselves.
Our Christmas in July is being held on 30 June this year at the Gladesville Bowling Club, and this is another event we are looking forward to. The cost will be $25 per adult, school-aged children $12 and pre-schoolers free.
Another reminder is our AGM which will be held on 18 August at the home of Dawn & Wim Bos in North Richmond. The meeting will start at approximately 1.30pm followed by an early evening barbeque. Please bring your own meat and drinks and let me know if you are coming before 11 August.
A Dinner Dance will be held on behalf of the ConnecTED Group, of which we are a member, on Friday 19 October 2001. The venue is the Epping Club, Rawson Street, Epping. This is a formal evening and we would like family and friends to come along and make up a table, and support ConnecTED. Anyone interested should contact me on 9642-5046 before 5 October.
Our Convention planning is coming along and we thank Sandra Parker for all her work in finding a venue. Now all we have to do is make it an enjoyable Convention.
Regards,
Muriel Cottrell, NSW Branch Secretary
New South Wales is now in full swing re: the 2001 Stanwell Tops Convention, and we are certainly looking forward to seeing as many people as possible who can attend. Sandra, Troy and myself went down to Stanwell Tops to check out the Bus services, and Sandra has now booked the buses for our various outings.
Come to the Convention with the aim of having a good time, as I am sure we all will. By the sound of the food we are to receive, we will also be putting on a few kilos during the week!
We held our AGM on 18 August at the Bos residence. Our incoming Committee is as follows:
Chairperson/President: Michael Blair
Secretary:
Rosa Guardado
Treasurer:
Therese Stapleton
Social co-ordinator: Alma Webber
Sports co-ordinator: Michael Blair
Youth co-ordinator: Diana Cottrell & Amanda
Shipley
Committee members: Peter Corcoran, Vivien McKee,
David Cowlishaw, Wim Bos, Anthony Parker,
Troy Parker
The 'old guard' so to speak, will keep on until after the Convention and we shall then change roles. We felt it wasn't fair to expect the new Committee to finish the Convention organizing.
Bye for now, and see you all at Stanwell Tops.
Muriel Cottrell, NSW Branch Secretary
Our next meeting will be held at the home of Muriel and Graham Cottrell on 11th November at 82 Mintaro Avenue, Strathfield, starting at 11am. Please bring your own meats for a barbecue after the meeting. This will be the first meeting conducted by our new Committee.
The Children's Christmas Party will be held on Sunday 2nd December at the Train Shed, Vickery's Winery, Northern Road, Luddenham, starting at 11am. Bring your own eats, drinks, etc. and some money for the kids to have a train ride. Barbecues are available at a fee. Those attending are also asked to bring a present for Santa to give to their children. Adults will be able to tour the Winery if they want to.
The Adults Christmas Party will be held on Saturday night 8th December at the Gladesville Bowling Club beginning at 6pm. Cost will be $25.00 per adult and $12.00 for school-age children. Children under school age are free. Please come and make a table of relatives and your friends.
I guess that is all for my final report as Secretary of the NSW Group of the SSPA.
Hoping you all have a very Merry Christmas and a bonza New Year.
Muriel Cottrell, NSW Branch Secretary
Hello all, this is my first report as the Secretary of NSW Branch.
Our Children's Christmas Party was held on Sunday 2nd December at the Train Shed, Vuckery's Winery. Ollie (National President) was our Santa Claus for this year. Thank you Ollie. You did a great job.
The Adults' Christmas Party will be held on Saturday night 8th December at the Gladesville Bowling Club. Please come along and help us celebrate this eventful night.
A Sports Day will be held at the end of January 2002 and the basketball season will commence in March 2002.
On Friday 5th April 2002 the "Fiesta Latina" will be held at Parramatta Town Hall. Come along for a wonderful night with professional Latin American dancers, food and drink. Proceeds go to the SSPA NSW Branch. Full details to follow in the next report.
We would like to wish Muriel Cottrell all the best in her recovery from the back operation she had the first week in December.
Hoping you are all well and we wish you a very Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year to come.
Regards,
Rosa Guardado, NSW Branch Secretary
What a spectacular night!!!
Alma achieved what she promised. (The Fiesta Latina)
There were beautiful dances from different cultures from South America, with lots of colourful costumes.
We also had a special guest from the Middle East performing belly dancing. It was spectacular. We were also treated to a special surprise from Amanda and Diana who sang 'Genie In the Bottle' and 'Tell me how you feel'. Well done girls.
And that wasn't all!! We had a draw for all South American products. The first prize included custards, jams, soft drinks, wine, traditional delicacies (Turrones) from Spain and best of all real sangria to the value of $100. The second prize included aftershave, ladies' lotions, baby lotion, hand cream and body lotion that smelt fantastic,
The food was delicious. We had Empanadas (pastry with mince and vegetables), Milanesas (beef schnitzel), vegetarian cakes and lots of desserts.
We also raffled a product from Medi Kay that was donated to us that night. All in all a great night was had by all, what more could we ask. Thank you Alma for the great night, on behalf of all NSW members and the guests. We hope after you recover from the stress, you will start thinking of organising another one for next year. We believe that you can do it again.
On behalf of everyone, I would like to wish Sara Lazar a speedy recovery from her leg straightening operation. All the best Sara.
Well this is all for now, till next time.
P.S.: What a pity for the ones that could not come to the Fiesta Latina night!!! You missed an unforgettable night.
Hoping you are all well.
Rosa Guardado, NSW Branch Secretary
Our Annual General Meeting followed by a lunch/afternoon tea was held in August at the home of Anthony and Therese Parker. The newly-elected council members for the NSW branch this year are as follows: Michael Blair, President; Fiona Abdilla, Treasurer; Vicki Fallon (that's me), Secretary; Wim Bos & Fred Shipley sharing the position of Sports Coordinator and finally, Amanda Shipley & Diana Cottrell sharing the job of Youth Representative.
The NSW branch is looking forward to another action-packed year and if last year was an indication, I think we will certainly have just that!
Basketball is having a little bit of a rest here at the moment whilst we catch our breath from the US trip. Some of our family members accompanied the team to the States and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Still on the subject of basketball, the Annual Awards dinner was held in September. This evening is held in recognition of the effort that the players and supporters put in throughout the season and once again the night was a great success.
We are now looking forward to our children's and adult's Christmas parties. If there is anyone wishing to attend the parties this year and wanting further details please feel free to contact me on 02-9371-5424. We would love to see a few new faces and any old ones!! You can be assured of a warm welcome.
The NSW branch was recently very saddened at the loss of our dear friend. If we could ever be assured of a friendly face and supporter in the crowd at basketball, or in attendance at a meeting or social event; we need never have looked any further. Dot was always there for us. Our very sincere sympathies are extended to Vivien and her sons Rob and Steve.
Until next time, bye for now,
Vicki Fallon, NSW State Secretary
NSW had their usual Christmas parties in December for the adults and children with much fun and fanfare.
The adults party was held at Blacktown City Soccer Club and a great night was had by all in attendance. $470 was raised by way of raffles for the ConnecTED Committee at Westmead Children's Hospital. Well done everyone! Our children's Christmas Party was held at Pecky's Playground in Blacktown, ably organised by Dianna Cottrell and Amanda Shipley. A couple of new faces were a welcome sight and it is our hope that more can be encouraged.
Our recent meeting/social was held on 15th February at Seven Hills. The next meeting will be in May,
Meanwhile our basketball season is about ready to get off the ground again. Any enquiries, please phone Wim Bos on 02-4571-3469 or mobile 0416-206132.. On the subject of sport, a Junior swim party was held on February 8th.
NSW members have been busy planning what appears to be a year of actvity and excitement! On the agenda in May is a weekend jaunt to Dubbo for a 'MEET & GREET'. Sounds a great opportunity for those members in the west of NSW who don't normally get a chance to join in our activities and for those city members who don't get much time away from the rat-race!
Vicki Fallon, NSW State Secretary
Our most recent activity was a trip to Dubbo to meet members that had not had any past association with short statured people. Sixteen people enjoyed Fred's BBQ breakfast followed by a trip to Western Plains Zoo and a most enjoyable dinner at Dubbo RSL. There was much interaction and informative conversation leaving everyone with memories of a great weekend.
Westmead Hospital's ConnecTED Committee's Dinner Dance will be held in June and it is hoped that as many members as possible will be in attendance.
Our basketball season finished in mid-May with the Eastern Eagles winning the overall competition. The players are now in training for a trip to Adelaide where they will be competing against a team from SA SSPA.
Two representatives from the NSW group recently attended a seminar held by the Disability Studies and Research Institute.
Our next Branch meeting will be the Annual General Meeting, to be held on 30th August at the home of Therese and Anthony Parker at 3pm.
Vicki Fallon, NSW State Secretary
This year has been one of "ups and downs" as far as the NSW branch is concerned. We have had a year of high emotion and discussion both with National Council and within our own branch. However, I feel that overall it has been useful for us to experience this. As is often the case, positive effects are the result of negative beginnings. We have taken the opportunity to look at ourselves and out of that, good can be the only result.
As I look back on what has been done by the NSW branch over the last 12 months, I am able to see that much has been accomplished. During the year we have had sports days, dinners, BBQ's, as well as our meetings. Not forgetting the odd time when we have gathered socially in support of other members i.e. weddings, birthdays, etc. Not only have we continued with the usual events that we have on our calendar, but we have established new experiences such as our trip to Dubbo, and the basketball trip to Adelaide. Hopefully by continuing to put new approaches and new ideas on the table; and by offering our friendship; we will continue to grow and develop as a branch.
Our AGM was held on Saturday 31st August and the following members were elected to committee positions in the NSW branch: Michael Blair, President; Vicki Fallon, Secretary; Nathan Monk, Treasurer. Sports Co-ordinators: Amie Markus & Janice Shipley. Youth Co-ordinators: Diana Cottrell & Amanda Shipley; Committee members: Rosa Guardado, Troy Parker, David Cowlishaw, Alma Weber, Muriel Cottrell & Mandy Cowlishaw.
Meeting dates have been diarised for the year ahead and tentative plans for social ctivities have been made. Our next meeting will be held at 12.30pm on November 15th at Alma Weber's place. If you wish to attend, please phone (02) 9896-5849 to obtain details. Our Adults' Christmas Party will be held at Fox Golden Century Seafood Restaurant at Fox Studios, Moore Park on December 13th, at 7pm. Cost=$35. Bookings need to be made by 7th December, so please phone Janice Shipley on (02) 9920-0278 to organise your $20 deposit. The Children's Christmas Picnic will be at Crestwood Reserve, Baulkham Hills on December 7th at 11am. Please phone Amanda on (0415) 400984 for details.
All NSW members should have recently received the first of our regular 1-page newsletters. We hope that this will be a communication aid for members all over the state, making it easier to plan attendance at meetings and socials... giving everyone more of an opportunity to participate in and contribute to the NSW branch.
It was pleasing to see the Canberra Convention well attended by NSW members. What a wonderful week we all had and as usual, it was great to catch up with members from the other states. Aided by Peter Corcoran, Angela Badalassi did an amazing job organising the week's activities. I'm sure their reward was in seeing so many happy faces. Thanks Angela and Peter!!
Vicki Fallon, NSW State Secretary
Well January is always a quiet time after the fanfare of Christmas. The SSPA seems to wind down somewhat and take a breather at this time of year. Here in NSW it's no exception. Also, the hot weather has given members a great excuse to take it easy.
Our last activity for 2003 was our Christmas party, held at a restaurant at Fox Studios. It was a great evening, well attended and enjoyed by all. (That is, once we were able to obtain parking for our). Robbie Williams had the audacity to have a concert on the same night as our Christmas party, making it almost impossible to find a parking spot!
The NSW branch had been running a raffle for some weeks prior to December, to raise funds to contribute to the purchase of a motorised scooter for one of our members. the raffle was drawn at the party with $1300 raised. The winners were Mick Drury, Maree Smith and Amanda Shipley.
The children's Christmas party was held earlier in December and attracted 28 children who had a most enjoyable time. Some new families were in attendance, which added to the success of the day.
The next meeting for the NSW branch will be held on 28th February at the home of Linda Markus, 9 Cadia Street Edgeworth. Please phone Linda on (02) 4955-2475 if you can attend. On 21st February a "pool party" for the under 18's is scheduled for 10am at the Shipley residence, 6 Barbara Boulevard, Seven Hills. Phone Amanda on (0415) 400-984 for details.
In March we have another social in the form of a Prawn & Chicken night, which will also be a fundraiser for both NSW SSPA and ConnecTeD. Whilst in April we have a social weekend planned..... "Easter in Maitland". Sport also gets underway again with Indoor Soccer matches scheduled for 21st and 28th March and 4th April. Details of any of the above events can be obtained by phoning myself on (02) 9371 5424 or (0404) 277-743.
Meanwhile, don't forget the NSW website on www.nsw.sspa.asn.au. All the times, dates and details of meetings, socials and sporting events are available on-line.
Wishing all members a HAPPY NEW YEAR,
Regards from
Vicki Fallon, NSW State Secretary
On the last weekend of February, the NSW branch held a meeting at the home of Linda Marcus at Edgeworth, a suburb of Newcastle. There were a pleasing number of people in attendance, and a BBQ with an enjoyable afternoon socialising followed the meeting. We had an interesting mix of people at the meeting with a few new faces being seen. Also in attendance was a Sydney University student who is doing her Honors research project on people of short stature. Narelle introduced herself and asked for volunteer interview subjects; promising that when her project is finished she will give the association a copy of her findings. As well as those already mentioned it was a pleasant surprise indeed to arrive at the meeting and find some South Australian members in attendance!!
It seems that there are a number of short statured people living in the Hunter region who would benefit from more contact with our group, which is one of the reasons that we have a weekend of activities planned for an “Easter Weekend in Maitland”. After a successful weekend away in Dubbo last year, we thought it would be beneficial for us to attempt to meet with those SSP’s and their families in the greater Newcastle area. So I would encourage anyone interested in joining us on a purely social/family weekend, to contact Janice Shipley our social coordinator for all the details. Janice can be reached on 99200278 or mobile 0412 016547.
On the 21st February a “pool party” for the under 18’s was held at the Shipley residence. The youth coordinators were a little disappointed by the low numbers in attendance, however those children who came, had a wonderful day. Thanks to the parents who brought their kids along!
Earlier in February, we had a night out at the movies for the over 30’s. Attending the Dendy theatre at Circular Quay to see the “Station Agent” proved to be a really pleasant way to spend a Sunday evening in Sydney. After watching the movie we adjourned to a nearby restaurant where we were able to discuss the movie over coffee whilst looking out over the harbour lights. What a life!
Our next social will be a Prawn & Chicken night to be held at Blacktown Soccer Club on the 20th March. The aim of the night is to raise funds for the Connective Tissue Dysplasia Clinic at Westmead Children’s Hospital. We are hoping to have as many people as possible in attendance so the night will be a success. To add to the fun of the evening a ‘Dutch Auction’ will be held. For bookings and details, please phone Janice on one of the numbers above.
Sport will be starting again later in March. There will be a series of 3 soccer matches set down for 21st & 28th March and 4th April. Any young people wishing to join in, contact Fred on 0412 338639.
The next branch meeting will be held at 1pm, on 15th May at the home of Rosa Guardado in Merrylands.
As everyone can see, NSW has a busy schedule in the forthcoming weeks.
That about sums it up for me this time, so until the next Journal, I wish you all “adieu”.
Vicki Fallon
NSW Secretary
Well "Hello" again form a slightly chilly NSW where winter is beginning to rear its head!
The NSW Branch has been quite active in the last couple of months. Our last function was a "Prawn & Chicken" night held at the Blacktown Soccer Club on March 20th. The aim of the evening was to raise funds, so after the yummy food a few fun games were held, as well as a "Dutch Auction". Everyone had a good laugh and we were able to raise some much needed funds for the Connective Tissue Dysplasia Clinic at Westmead Children's Hospital. So all in all, it was a successful night. Thanks must go to Janice Shipley and Ammie Markus for their hard work in organizing a great function.
In mid April 10 members travelled to the Hunter Region for the weekend. On the Saturday they attended the Stroud Show and later that evening dined at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club. It was an opportunity to take the SSPA to meet with a few of the members in that area and a good weekend was had by all.
We held the first of our scheduled indoor soccer games on March 21st, but unfortunately the following two games were cancelled due to inadequate numbers. Not to be deterred, however, our basketball training will resume on May 16th at 1pm at Blacktown Leisure Centre. Three matches played on consecutive weekends will follow the training. Any new or old members whether spectators all players are more than welcome to come along. Contact Fred Shipley for any further information on 041 233 8639.
A movie day for the kids and teenagers is set for May 22nd. Once again new members would be made most welcome. Please contact Dianna or Amanda on 0415 154 00984 for details.
Of course the Queen's Birthday weekend in Albury is something that the NSW members are looking forward to once again. Anybody wishing to clarify details of the weekend is welcome to call me on (02) 9371 5424.
The next meeting of the NSW branch will be held on May 15th at the home of Rosa Guardado in Merrylands. Please bring something for afternoon tea and call Rosa on (02) 9760 2468 to confirm that you are coming.
Until next time, regards from Vicki Fallon.
As far as SSPA activities are concerned, it’s been a bit slower in NSW of late. Must have something to do with the cold weather…everyone staying indoors?
Recently some NSW members travelled to Albury to join with interstate members for a weekend of sport and socializing. It takes both the organisers and the participants to make an occasion a great success and by all reports I hear that the “Albury Long |Weekend” was exactly that.
Our last branch meeting was held at Rosa Guardado’s home. The meeting attracted a good roll up and we were able to follow proceedings by having a pleasant afternoon tea hosted by Rosa.
The next NSW meeting will be the AGM to be held on August 21st at the Seven Hills home of Alma Weber. An afternoon tea will follow the meeting and everyone is warmly encouraged to attend. Please phone Alma on 98965849 to confirm your attendance and/or ask for directions etc.
As the NSW branch will be celebrating their 30th anniversary in August, we plan to have a Commemorative Picnic. The Picnic will be an inexpensive family day and so it is hoped that as many old, current and new members alike will join us on this occasion.
NSW SSPA basketball resumed on July 4th. After two training sessions a series of four games are to be held on successive weekends beginning on August 1st. Blacktown Leisure Centre is the venue and play starts at 1.30pm. Anyone interested in joining in, can contact Fred Shipley on 99200278 for details.
Until next time,
Vicki Fallon, NSW Secretary.
Branch report - September 2004
Well here we are in the midst of a very wet and windy Sydney. The rain has been falling in NSW but unfortunately, not quite enough in all the right places! However the rain hasn’t dampened the spirits of the branch with activity still at a considerable pace.
Junior members participating in a Putt-Putt Golf day back in July had lots of fun with the youth coordinator and a few older members.
Fred Shipley, the sports coordinator is pleased with the contribution made by the basketball players on the training days that took place over weekends in July/August. The schedule has been slightly rearranged with the first of 3 games to take place on 22nd August. This is to be followed by a presentation evening, on a date to be set in September.
Some of our members attended a trivia night in mid-August that was held by the ConnecTeD Committee to raise money for the Connective Tissues Dysplasia Clinic at Westmead Hospital. By all reports it was a very successful evening and the Clinic will benefit to the tune of quite a few thousand dollars!
Our next meeting is the NSW AGM to be held on Saturday 21st August at the Seven Hills home of Alma Weber. The meeting is to be followed by an afternoon tea. All are welcome to attend.
The organising of the Commemorative Picnic is going ahead. We have managed to send flyers out to 100 members past and present, as well as prospective new members. We sincerely hope for a good roll up on the day. It should be a pleasant family outing with the chance to catch up on old and new friendships. It is to be noted that we had to reschedule the Picnic for the 12th September. Apologies to anybody inconvenienced by this, however I feel certain that at this stage, everyone has already been notified of the change. Let’s see all of you NSW people at Parramatta Park on Sunday 12th September at 11am for the Picnic!!
Regards,
Vicki Fallon, NSW Secretary.

On the sport side of things, NSW have been very athletic with two sports, indoor soccer and basketball. After three games of basketball, Eastern Eagles have won two games out of the three. A basketball awards night will be held on a date to be announced.
The NSW Branch's next social event will be our 30th anniversary combined adults and children's Christmas Party on 18th December 2004 at the Gladesville Bowling Club. Hi Everyone!
Well its
2005! Christmas is all over and now its back to work, school or what
ever takes your fancy!
Well NSW had their Christmas party on the 18.12.2004 back at Gladesville
Bowling Club, it was an awesome night thanks to Janice and Vivien for
organising the night. Santa was there with presents for the kids and if
Santa could have stayed there all night I’m sure Chantal Bos would have
sat on his lap all night. Fun and games were played by the children
with members from our country region joining us in the celebration.
Congratulation speeches where made, to those who achieved something
special in the year. Basketball presentations were made on the night
with
Alex Simak
receiving
the award for the Eastern Eagles and
Diana Cottrell
winning the award for Western Red Backs.
Congratulations to them both.
As some of you all know NSW have had two meet and greets in the country
areas for those who are unable to join us for functions here in Sydney.
I have written letters to the country members advising that we would
like to have another great weekend. I’m waiting for replies, so far i
have had a few and will be organising the weekend and will advise when
and where we will be having the weekend so for all you country members
please get back to me ASAP so we can organise this awesome weekend.

Firstly NSW has a new addition - Congratulations to Anthony and Therese Parker, on the birth of their little girl Abby. Chloe now has a sister.
The last meeting for NSW was held at the home of the Shipley’s, where a lot of discussion took place on fundraising. In the meeting we discussed that we would have a Chocolate drive. I have organised this Chocolate drive and the chocolates will be handed out to members at the next meeting, which will be held at the home of Nathan Monk on the 14th of May 2005 at 2pm. Please contact Nathan on 0412505704 to let him know that you will be attending.
We need people to get in there and help sell these chocolates if you can’t attend the meeting at Nathan’s, please contact Janice or myself (Ammie) on 99200278 to arrange getting the chocolates to you.
The next big thing for NSW is FORSTER 2005! So far we have had a good response with members from the area. So for those who are thinking about it, get in there and book your room. It’s going to be a great weekend.
Thanks,
Ammie Markus
NSW Secretary
Hi Everyone

Committee members as present are Michael Blair: Chairperson, Ammie Markus: Secretary, Nathan Monk: Treasurer, Janice Shipley: Social Co-ordinator and Wim Bos: Sports Co-ordinator.

FORSTER 2005
What a wonderful turn out we had, and an awesome time. On the Friday afternoon, the Sydney siders arrived to the site and took in the surroundings we were then joined by a family from Coffs Harbour (Sydenham Family) and our mate Scottie and his brother-in-law from good old Muswellbrook. After getting to know the new family and getting comfie at our new place for the weekend, we all started to get hungry so we went over to the local Bistro and dined, then went back to the Motel and were ready to embrace the weekend ahead of us.
Saturday morning some of us woke at 6am for the excitement of the rest of the families soon joining us. Then in walks the Bos family with Daniel in full power and Chantal right behind him. Another family from Coffs Harbour (the Coyne family) and Shenea from Central Coast joined us. There were kids everywhere, all enjoying each other’s company, learning about each other, so we all got together and headed to the local aquatic centre for a swim. The big kids were playing water fights (some times we just never grow up). After all the fun in the pool we were getting hungry so we all headed of for a feed, and then went ten pin bowling, we made up four teams put up the bummers and away we went. The noise of it didn’t bother our little man Kobey who slept through the whole game then decided to wake when leaving, wont be long until he will be rolling the balls down the lane. The kids had a huge day and sitting back you could see friendships form. Hungry again we headed back over to the Bistro for some dinner where Wilma Stein joined us for a catch up (Lynelle Boyd’s Mum). Tired little heads were setting in so back to the motel we all went where some of the bigger kids sat up and caught up on the weekend.
Sunday morning and the kids knew they would have to say goodbye to their new friends. We all headed to McDonalds for brekkie and then said our goodbyes, some even with a tear in their eyes. Some of the families went to the local park for a play before heading home.
I was so happy to organise a great weekend just to see the kids smile and allow short statured children that have never seen another get to know and become friend with people just like themselves. Thanks Janice for all your help and thanks to the families that joined us.
Forster weekend will be organised again for next April so keep an eye out for a flyer.
Also, NSW has another meet and greet coming up in November more information is to follow. This weekend will be down at the South Coast and we will be going whale and dolphin watching so please keep your calender free and a flyer will be out in the next month with all the information.
As for the Convention 2006, things are coming along nicely. We have booked a place that over looks the three sisters at Katoomba. Events are being organised and we looking forward to seeing you all there
Thanks everyone,
Ammie

XMAS TIME!!!!

The SSPA New South Wales Adult's and Children's Christmas Party was held on Saturday 11th December at Bicentennial Park, Homebush. It was our first time at this central location and it proved to be an ideal spot for our picnic. The morning's dubious weather cleared to provide us with a beautiful day. There was a good turnout with some new families joining us. Santa arrived in the afternoon with presents for all the children!
We held a
Trivia Night at the Blacktown City Soccer Club in Seven Hills on 18/2 to raise
much needed funds for the 2006 National Convention. There was a good turnout of
approximately 85 adults and children. After introductions, the night started
with the trivia competition and between rounds most joined in playing some fun
fundraising games. Halfway through the night some autographed Australian Cricket
& Wallaby Team merchandise was auctioned. At the end of the trivia the lucky
door prizes & raffle prizes were drawn. Everyone had a wonderful night and the
committee is very pleased with the fundraising effort - a very good contribution
towards the amount we need for the convention. The committee would like to send
out a big thank you to everyone who came and to those who made donations on the
night. Your support is greatly appreciated.
On Sunday 19/2 we had a NSW Branch Meeting at the Shipley's house in Seven
Hills. Although there was generally a low turnout, it was fantastic to have the
Murns from Canberra join us. Most of the discussion was about the 2006 National
Convention in Katoomba and the fundraisers we're having for it. After the
meeting we had a BBQ with a new family joining us. Some of the people went for a
swim in the Shipley's pool.
Later in the year
we're planning on going on a Dolphin Cruise on the South Coast of NSW.
Please stay tuned for more information on this event.
Thanks,
Ammie Markus
Hi Guys,
Convention, convention, convention! Now that it’s coming so close that’s all
I’ve been thinking about and doing!!
I would like to take this chance to let you know about our different dinner dance at this year’s convention. It’s not only a cruise dinner dance, it’s also the first annual SSPA Academy Awards Night, where you come as your favorite A-list star! (I’m going as Anna Nicole Smith!) The night is going to be filled with fun and awards of all types. You will walk the red carpet feeling like a star! I know I will, so come dressed as your favorite A-lister and have fun with us all!
Lost of fundraising been happening and there’s still more to come, so if you have any ideas please contact me by emailing ammie_markus@mlc.com.au. If you have any ideas for social activities, please contact me and we can get together and organize it.
There’s not much else to report right now, but I do hope we have some more stuff going on soon.
Cheers,
Ammie Markus

Convention Report
A group of us arrived on day 3 of the Convention and were happy to see that a large group of families had come to the convention. The Medical Day went well with Prof. Silence and Dr. Jenny Ault giving talks, as well as two kids’ workshops- “Learn Your Bones” with a wonderful job done by Angela from the ACT. Well done! Teaching the kids about their bones using lollies, I wish I had that when I was at school maybe I would have listened. Then there was kids cooking where the kids made funny faces and the old classic chocolate crackles, the kids did well maybe we might have the next Jamie Olivier in our group.
On Wednesday night, a disco was held with the children dressing up as their favourite cartoon character or cartoon hero, there was Bob the Builder, Cow Girl, Marge and Homer Simpson and many more.
Thursday we awoke to the sports day where games of basketball were played by short statured people and average height friends and family, as well as young and old. Well done! To those who got in there and had a go. That evening was a free night, so we could all relax for a big night for the Dinner Dance on the Nepean belle the following night.
The AGM was held on the Wednesday people who didn’t attend the AGM went to
Penrith markets or relaxed around the site.
The Dinner Dance had a theme to it, as “Academy Awards Night”, with awards given to Michael, Vicki and Alex for their efforts in organising the Convention. As we cruised along the Nepean River we dined on beautiful buffet style food, and then for those ones that like to groove danced the night away, with the fairy lights sparkling on the soft water, awww now how romantic, almost sounds like a love story.
There were goodbyes from me on Thursday while the rest of the Convention headed
out to the science tour. I hope you all had a great time at the Convention, and
we all hope to see you all at the Port Macquaire Convention in
2007.
Meetings
At our last meeting was held at Viv McKee’s, there was, a handful of members joining the meeting, but it was great to get together. I hope to see you at the next meeting to be held at the home of Wim and Dawn Bos (Newcastle area). A flyer will be out before the meeting with further details, so please keep an eye out for that.
Featherdale Report
On Saturday the 14th of October, a group of members from NSW joined together and had a family day at Featherdale Wild Life Park. It was a very, very hot day but once we were inside the park, it was like we were in a tropical place with all the large tree’s covering us, it made it feel like it was 10 degrees cooler in the park then it was outside the park. We had a great turn out for Featherdale with families from the toddler day joining us and even older members that we had not seen in a while. The children got to pat a koala and see many Australian animals. After seeing the sites of the park we all sat down for some lunch in the kiosk area where new parents got the chance to speak about their children and ask questions. It was a very enjoyable day.
Sports Report from NSW
NSW haven’t done much with sports for a while, so a group of us got
together with motivation from Fred at Stanhope Gardens on Saturday 21st
October, for a fun game and training of basketball. It was great to see everyone
again and after the game we all went to Amanda, Damian and Ammie’s house for a
BBQ lunch. There are other games scheduled so if you would like any info on
basketball please contact my self (Ammie) or Fred on 9920 0278 for further
details. Any age can come along and play basketball, it’s a great chance to have
a run around and catch up with friends and make new friends. We hope to see you
all at the next game.
Coming Events
January 13th 2007 – Children’s Pool Party – 11am @ Fred & Janice Shipley’s House. 6 Barbara Blvd. Seven Hills NSW. Please bring towels, sunscreen, swimmers and drinks. BBQ lunch will be provided. Please either contact Ammie either on phone 0405 603 916 or email ammie_markus@mlc.com.au (not Janice) as Ammie will pass on the information to Janice.
Cheers,

Christmas Picnic and Dinner - 9/12/2006
We held our Christmas Picnic at Bicentennial Park, Homebush on 9th December 2006. It was very pleasing to see a lot of new families come along. Santa arrived after lunch to give out presents and chocolates to all the children. Thanks to the people who donated their time and money for this event.
In the evening, we had a Christmas dinner at Chili's Texas Grill in Wentworthville.
We have had a lot going on in the past few months. With Christmas all over it’s back to planning things for the year ahead. I’ve been pretty busy organising a lot of kids days as we have had a lot of young toddlers join us here in NSW with our youngest being 10 weeks old, and already been to 2 events. We held a pool party at the Shipleys and it was a great day with plenty of sun and fun. We had a great turn out, it was good to see everyone have a fabulous time together.
Coming events on the NSW Calendar are:
Hoop-Dee-Doo! How are you? Are you ready to play? We are too!!
We are
going to Wiggles World
on the 10th of March 2007 at 11am. Cost: $12.50 per child, or if we get more
then ten children it will be $9.50 per child; $2.50 per Adult.
Wiggles World Address: 1A Stanton Road, Seven Hills, NSW
Wiggles World is centrally located only 20 minutes from Minchinbury, Pymble, Chatswood and Parramatta. It is also only 2 minutes from the end of the M2, M7 and 5 minutes from the Prospect Highway exit of the M4.
As one of Sydney's premier indoor play centres, we cater exclusively for the fun, entertainment and development of children up to the age of 10 years. We love to have fun in our own Wiggly style.
All children that are playing need to bring socks, but you can buy a pair of Wiggles socks for $6.50 or hire a pair for $2.50.
Can I bring my own food? No, there is a fully stocked kitchen/cafe with a wide variety of food and drinks. Obviously baby food and special dietary food would be an exemption.
We look forward to seeing you at Wiggles World.
Please contact me (Ammie) 0405 603 916 or email on ammie_markus@mlc.com.au to let me know if you are attending so I can organise the group booking.
As advised in our newsletter we where going to have an Easter egg hunt and Easter Hat Parade but this event has been cancelled due to many events around Easter. I’m sorry to inform those who have been interested already, please keep and eye out for further events, as there will be plenty.
Girls Night out Friday 13th (April)

We held our first meeting for the year at the home of Wim and Dawn Bos in Valentine (near Newcastle). We had a modest turnout and following the meeting we had afternoon tea.

We've had a couple of other functions planned over the past few months which unfortunately had to be cancelled mostly due to a lack of numbers. If you're intending to come to functions, please let the organiser know as soon as possible as it helps greatly with the planning of the function.

On 19 May we
had our second branch meeting for the year at the Westmead Children's Hospital.
Professor David Sillence and Dr Jenny Ault attended as well as several other
members. Due to the recent resignation of Ammie Markus as Branch Secretary,
Nathan Monk kindly agreed at the meeting to take on the position until the AGM
in August.
For the first time in a number of years, a basketball team representing NSW
travelled to Albury to compete against Victoria at the annual SSPA Sporting
Weekend in June. From all reports, it was a very good game and a most enjoyable
weekend – congratulations to Victoria on their victory.
Some of our members have been involved with media interviews about the
documentary series "Short Stories" which recently aired on SBS. The series rated
very well and we've received plenty of positive feedback.
We held a Cadbury Easter Egg fundraiser at Easter time, mainly to contribute
towards this year's convention. We're also planning a Dinner Dance fundraiser in
July/August though haven't been able to finalise a venue yet. We're intending
for the night to also be a fundraiser with activities such as a raffle and
auction. If you have any prizes you could donate or questions about the night
please phone me on 0401 031393. More details of the night will be up on the

NSW Chairperson
Branch report - September 2007
The NSW Branch AGM took place recently at the Westmead Children’s Hospital. Professor Sillence and Dr Jenny Ault were in attendance at the meeting which was held in a Function room at the hospital. Numbers were modest; however the meeting was positive, with members enthusiastic to begin the new year.
The new committee for 2007-08 was elected, the results of which are:
Chairperson: Michael Blair
Treasurer: Alex Simak
Secretary: Vicki Fallon
Social Co-ordinator: Tracey Mamula
Sports Co-ordinator: Alex Simak
Committee members: David Cowlishaw, Troy Parker, Dawn Bos.
The newly elected committee set the dates for Branch meetings for the year ahead. They are as follows:
Sat November 10th 2007, 1pm – to be held at the home of Alex Simak, 44 Lavinia St Seven Hills. This meeting will be followed in the evening by an “early Christmas dinner” for adults (the venue is yet to be arranged, but it will be held in the Parramatta area….members will be notified by email and/or mail out. Details will also be placed on the NSW website).
Sun February 17th 2008, 11am - to be held at the home of Michael Blair in Narrabeen and to be followed by a beach afternoon for those who wish to surf, sunbake and socialise.
Sat May 17th 2008, 11am – to be held at the home of Troy Parker and to be followed by a BBQ lunch.
Sat August 16th 2008, 10am – the 2008 AGM will be held once again at the Children’s Hospital Westmead.
As well as the abovementioned adult’s Christmas dinner, we have also planned our usual “Christmas Picnic” for families. This will take place on Sunday 9th December 2007, to begin at 11am at Bicentennial Park Homebush. It will be wonderful to see you all there and if the 2006 picnic was anything to go by, we can look forward to a great day!
As stated above, members will be contacted by email and/or mail out to remind them of both the Christmas dinner and picnic. In the meantime if you have any queries feel free to contact either myself (vickifallon@hotmail.com 0404 277 743) or our social co-ordinator Tracey, on 9631-7385.
The NSW Branch will have substantial representation at the 40th SSPA Convention and members are really looking forward to catching up with HUNDREDS of their SSPA friends.
I’m pleased to report that the Lotto fundraiser held by the Branch to contribute to convention funds was a success. Thanks to those involved in the organising.
See you all in Port Macquarie,
Vicki Fallon
NSW Secretary.
A NSW Branch meeting was recently held at the home of Alex Simak. The well attended meeting was followed by afternoon tea kindly provided by Alma Weber. Thanks Alma!
Later in the evening members and friends gathered together for dinner at “Sabatinis” restaurant, Parramatta, for a pre-Christmas celebration. With 17 people present, everyone had an enjoyable night of good company and great food.
NSW member Dawn Bos is coordinating a “Back to Bonny Hills” w/e from Fri 29 Feb- Sun 2 March 08. Sounds like fun! (NB: Info about this w/e should be elsewhere in this Journal).
Our Family Christmas Picnic was held at Bicentennial Park Homebush on Sunday 9th December. A good day was had by all and we were most fortunate to have clear skies until around 3.30pm when the predicted storm swept in. Thanks to those folks who travelled long distance to join us for the day, including Santa who made the kids very happy!
Our next social gathering will be a pool party on Saturday 2nd Feb 2008. It will be held at the home of Tracey & Brittany Mamula and is planned to kick off at 11am.
The next Branch meeting is planned for 11am, Sunday 17th Feb, at the home of Michael Blair. As Michael lives at Narrabeen, the meeting will be followed by a social afternoon on the beach.
Watch for the “flyer” that will be sent out to remind you of both of these fun-in-the-sun social activities.
Wishing everyone a wonderful festive season full of laughter, love and good cheer, regards,
Vicki Fallon
NSW Secretary
Since our Xmas Picnic was held back in December, the NSW Branch has had two opportunities to meet and socialise…..both of which were happy occasions, very well attended.
The first was our wonderful Pool Party + BBQ held at the beginning of February at the home of Tracey & Brittany Mamula. With over 50 people in attendance (including two new families), everyone had a relaxed and fun time. Thanks so much, Tracey & Brittany for hosting a great day!
The second occasion was our first branch meeting for 2008, which was held at the home of Michael Blair. As Michael lives so close to the beach at Narrabeen, we adjourned there for lunch after the meeting concluded. All agreed it was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Oh yes and by the way, we DID manage to get Michael to the sand!
To get our fundraising off to a start this year, the NSW Branch is organising a chocolate drive. Hopefully members will be supportive and help sell (or buy) as many chocs as possible.
We are also planning a gala dinner dance fundraiser which is set for August 16th. It will follow the NSW AGM which is to be held earlier that day.
Patrick Keane from VIC has organised another National Footy Tipping Competition this year to help raise funds for the 2008 Convention. All NSW members are encouraged to join the comp as it is a great way of helping out while having a bit of fun! For details, check out the website at
Our sports coordinator, Alex Simak is aiming to get basketball up and running here in NSW once again. Alex has set dates for Sunday afternoon training sessions to be held on 2/3, 16/3, 30/3, 13/4, 4/5, 1/6 at Stanhope Gardens. Please phone Alex on 0411 034 020 if you are interested in playing.
The next NSW Branch meeting will be held on May 17 at the home of Troy Parker. A BBQ lunch will follow the meeting, giving us another opportunity to socialise. Details will be forwarded to members in a mail out.
Vicki Fallon
NSW Secretary
Hi folks, how the year is flying along! Almost time for our SSPA Albury-Wodonga June long weekend. This annual sports w/e on the SSPA calendar has become a very popular event for members. It not only provides a w/e of friendly sports and games but is a welcomed opportunity for members to catch up with each other, particularly with friends from interstate. No doubt there will be quite a few NSW members heading off to Albury in June. If you haven’t been before think about it this year and get your booking organised. I’m sure you won’t regret it.
The NSW Branch has been holding a chocolate drive to raise funds for this year’s SSPA Convention which is being held in Qld.
An additional fund raiser, our gala trivia night, is being planned for August 16th.
The gala night is to follow the AGM which will take place earlier in the day. This makes it much easier for those members who travel from regional areas of NSW to attend SSPA functions in Sydney. You can kill two birds with one stone and make a weekend of it. So make sure you keep that date free folks!
A wonderful time was had at Central Gardens Merrylands back in March, when a tennis and picnic day was held by the NSW Branch. The weather was terrific, the attendance was great and everyone enjoyed the fun and good company.
Thanks once again to our social coordinators Tracey and Brittany for organising yet another successful event.
Our next NSW Branch meeting will be held at 11am on May 17 at the home of Troy Parker: 10/81 Donohue Street, Kings Park.
A BBQ lunch will follow the meeting, giving us a further opportunity to socialise…..please bring along your meat and drinks. Kindly contact Troy on (02) 9837-2467 to confirm your attendance.
Vicki Fallon
NSW Secretary.
