2007 albury sporting weekend report
The 12th annual SSPA Albury Sporting Weekend was another wonderful national event enjoyed by 58 SSPA members from New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and Victoria.
This wonderful weekend originated in 1995 to provide opportunities for people of short stature to play competitive sport against others like themselves. It began with a rivalry match between the New South Wales and Victorian basketball teams and has progressed into a weekend, which provides competitive sporting opportunities for all who attend.
Since 1995, Leanne Wegner has coordinated the organisation of this wonderful event and we all thank her for her time and effort. The weekend has grown from strength to strength and has turned itself into a mini-convention.
2007 was another one of these wonderful weekends…
Most arrived Friday night and spent
their evening socialising and catching up on the months of absence in between.
Saturday saw an extremely competitive basketball match between NSW and VIC – and
it was all for the Rosemary Hobbs Trophy again. I’m very pleased to announce
that the VICs finally returned home with the trophy. The match was not only
competitive but it was very enjoyable with much encouragement on the court from
both teams. It was a noble demonstration of sportsmanship. Congratulations to
Ryan Cowlishaw on making his debut onto the basketball court – what a star! Both
teams would like to thank their coaches and all the supporters who cheered them
on from the sidelines.

A dinner and a dance were enjoyed by all back at the Lake Hume Resort that night
and plenty of sore heads rose the next morning. Sunday saw us all back in the
sporting stadium for games of soccer and hockey. Soccer was as fierce as ever
and many a star was witnessed – it was great to see Anthony Parker out there
showing off his talents, I never knew he had a knack for the ‘ol soccer. Making
her debut onto the soccer court was Stella – for all those attending next year…
beware, man that girl is fast

The Annual Albury Sporting Weekend
would not continue if it were not for the support of the people who attend. I
would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for coming along and
invite you (and the rest of the SSPA) to come back again next year. A special
thank you to Patrick Keane, Rob Millard, Gail Young, Marie Millard, Trevor
Wegner, Lyn Clayton and of course Leanne Wegner for their magnificent helping
hands.
I look forward to seeing you all in September!
Merry Young
